So now I am off to upgrade my ESXi hosts to either 6.0 or 6.5 but the big questions are if I can run Docker natively and can I afford to give up the “fat client”, because ESXi 6.5 no longer supports it. Hopefully this will help others coming up in the IT world and maybe break barriers for those who feel they do not have the resources to learn some of these very complex platforms. Not all of us have access to real servers, so it is nice to see that we can “beef up” some well built workstations to perform the job nicely.įinally, I want to thank you for reading this extremely long and boring walkthrough but I have gleaned a lot of information from others in the past, so I feel a responsibility to do my part in sharing knowledge with others. Furthermore, this all started because I want to begin playing with containers as well as automation/orchestration tools, so the only way to do that is to have a mini datacenter at home.

So in conclusion, I am VERY EXCITED about having the vCenter 6.5 Appliance running properly in my home network with minimal effort, because I really like Update Manager as it makes keeping my Hosts and VMs up-to-date much easier. Internet Explorer will protect you even from yourself, so always best to use hostname versus IP. If not, then look into some custom firmware like Tomato, DD-WRT, or Merlin – if you have an ASUS router. Most routers nowadays are “smart routers” but I cannot speak to all makes and models, so I would just recommend you check to see if your router can function as a local DNS server.

This is actually more ideal but this requires a working DNS server in your network, so I find my home router to be a small wonder in this regard as it provides local DNS name resolution. But in this case, I did encounter a problem opening the vCenter Appliance directly via IP because of the certificate being created with the hostname. This never really needed mentioning before because most of the time we can access systems via IP address, since a home lab has a limited number of machines anyway.

So let’s get right to it, but first I want to mention that most of my setups depend on my home router which is an ASUS RT-AC68U running the custom Merlin Firmware. I prefer to keep things “dynamic” or at least as close to a “clean deployment” as possible, so here goes… So I decided I would write up a quick walkthrough showing everyone how easy it is to get the vCenter 6.5 Appliance running without having to “hard code” configuration settings within the VMX file. A few people mentioned running the vCenter Appliance without having to modify anything, but they did not document what they did.

So I looked around the web and DOZENS of people have walk-throughs on how to get the vCenter 6.5 Appliance to run on VMware Workstation, but I did not like their recommendations on modifying the VMX file.

Schweet!!! Furthermore, vSphere 6.0+ has added support for Mac OSX 10.8 and higher, so I decided that I would go ahead and move to ESXi 6.0 hosts with a central vCenter 6.5 Appliance. I was going to upgrade my home lab from vSphere 5.1 to 5.5, but then I read that the vCenter 6.5 Appliance has integrated Update Manager within it. Well, I recently published my adventure with Proxmox VE on the Mac Mini but I ended up having to come back to VMware, since I want to have some “native” Mac OSX support.
